Chris Sherman has been active in the SEO and SEM industry from the very beginning, from Search Engine Watch and Search Engine Strategies to Search Engine Land and Search Marketing Expo. He was there from the start and in 2019 Chris announced at the last SMX event this year that he was retiring. Here is my interview with this man, a man who designed this room as we know it.
His first job in SEO was at The Mining Company, which eventually became About.com (and now Dotdash). This page was launched in 1997 just so you know the age. His job there was to write articles on the state of the search that search engines like Excite.com and other older search engines cover. He met Danny Sullivan when Danny gave the keynote and the Internet Librarian Conference. Danny spoke about his early paper in the Webmasters Guide to Search Engines, and this was the first of its kind. Then in 2001 Danny sold Search Engine Watch to Internet.com and was then hired to work on Search Engine Watch under Danny. Chris Elwell was the person involved in the acquisition and they switched to Search Engine Strategies, the conference.
Then that company sold Search Engine Watch to Incisive Media. He stayed a while when Danny (and others) founded Search Engine Land. Shortly afterwards he switched to Search Engine Land and the Third Door Media Company to found this company. Both of the companies he worked for became agencies in space.
He will work on personal projects; Word work and cooking. He said he wasn't sure if he was professionally done, but he had time to think.
