In a nutshell, think of badges as “tips” for your favorite Instagram influencers during a Live stream, but there’s opportunity for them to be so much more.

What Are Instagram Live Badges? 

Never heard of badges? Don’t worry, it’s a pretty new monetization concept on social media but it’s about to pick up speed!

The concept of “badges” plays off a popular feature within Twitch and TikTok, which allows followers to “tip” creators during live streams. And now this feature is coming to Instagram!

In recent months, Instagram reported an increase in Instagram Live streams leading to a 70% increase in views from February to March 2020.

According to the press release: “Live has helped creators and businesses stay connected to their followers and bring people together. With badges, creators can generate income from the content they’re already creating.”

The launch of badges on Instagram Lives not only creates a new revenue stream for creators, it also works to develop a sense of exclusivity on the platform.

With the new feature, viewers, followers, and fans can purchase a badge during a Live video that will stand out in the comments and unlock additional features, including placement on a creator’s list of badge holders and access to a special heart.

So it’s a way for followers to show their support to creators while building a sense of VIP community.

How Do Instagram Live Badges Work? 

Once badges are rolled out, they will be available in 3 different levels, based on the number of hearts available to purchase.

Viewers can buy one heart for $0.99, two for $1.99, or 3 for $4.99. It’s reported that initially, creators will receive 100% of the revenue from Instagram Live badges sales.

Creators can see how many hearts a viewer has purchased thanks to a visual icon in the chat stream, making it easy to see who is supporting them for a shout-out.

According to fitness influencer @charleeatkins: “Badges in Instagram couldn’t have come at a better time for fitness creators like me. It’s an easy way to channel the love we already see in our Live feeds so we can continue building and creating for our fans.”

For influencers like Charlee Atkins, this new revenue stream could make a real difference to how they earn from their platform. In the future, every Instagram Live they host as the opportunity to make them money.

How to Get Instagram Live Badges for Your Profile: 

The good news is that Bages are coming to Instagram very soon. But the bad news is that it’s still being tested and rolled out.

Instagram revealed that testing will begin next month with a small group of creators and businesses, with promises of the feature expanding in the coming months.

Instagram audiences across the US, Brazil, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Turkey, Spain, and Mexico are tipped to be the first to get access, so if you’re in those markets, it could be on your profile sooner than you think!
